BREAST CANCER TOLL TOPS SMOKING DEATHS IN UK
by Nigel Hawkes

Breast cancer is now the commonest form of life-threatening cancer in Britain, according to two major charities. With an estimated 39,500 cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year, the disease has narrowly overtaken lung cancer, with an estimated 38,900 cases. Non-melanoma skin cancer is commoner than either, with 44,000 new cases a year, but is seldom fatal.

But while lung cancer affects both sexes, breast cancer almost exclusively affects women. The figures refer to 1998 and are an estimate. Statisticians at the Cancer Research Campaign and Imperial Cancer Research Fund used actual figures for England and estimates for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, based on 1997 figures adjusted for the year-on-year trend.

Lung cancer has been declining as the number of male smokers has fallen. But experts say that they are still unsure about the reasons for the steady rise in breast cancer over the past 30 years.

Sir Paul Nurse, director-general of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, said: "A number of lifestyle factors may be contributing to breast cancer trends. For example, more British women are choosing to have their children later in life and doctors are reporting an increase in obesity and in post-menopausal women this is a risk factor."

Concerns have been raised about a breast cancer drug after tests showed that it greatly increased the risk of cancer of the womb lining and deep-vein thrombosis. Researchers testing tamoxifen claim in this week's British Journal of Cancer that healthy women who use the drug to prevent breast cancer may be at high risk of contracting other diseases.
