Diabetes Rates will Double over 30 Years Diabetes rates will double worldwide by 2030 even if the obesity rate remains stable, an international team of researchers said yesterday. The rate will go up even higher if, as is expected, more people eat a so-called western diet and stop exercising. "The number of people with diabetes is projected to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030," the researchers write in the latest issue of Diabetes Care. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of premature death in the UK and is closely linked to heart disease. Both are strongly associated with a poor diet and lack of exercise. "The human and economic costs of this epidemic are enormous," said Sarah Wild of Edinburgh University who, with colleagues in Australia, Denmark and Switzerland, used United Nations data to project future diabetes rates. They go for "a concerted, global initiative"
to reduce the epidemic. FROM THE CAMPAIGN FOR TRUTH
