Up Close and Personal
The monthly interview with CTM founder, Phillip Day

ECLUB: Bonjour.
PD: Getting ready for the French referendum, Brian?
ECLUB: 55% of the French will say 'Non!' to the EU constitution. What do you think?
PD: It will be a blow to the EU if the French do vote it down as they are one of the core states. A French no would set back Brussels's integration plans tremendously, which can only be a good thing. Germany is battered as ever on the rocks of financial disaster, mostly due to the euro. There are worrying signs, though, that if the French do scupper it, the British may be denied their vote out of expediency, since a referendum after France would be superfluous.
ECLUB: Why would that be a problem?
PD: Because the British need to confront the whole problem of Europe themselves, which they have so far resolutely refused to do. Denying us a say in a referendum would have the effect of keeping British dissention under cover while the euro-federalists run off with their constitution, tweak it a bit, then return saying, 'OK, we fixed the problem, vote on it again.'
ECLUB: An interesting few weeks to watch then. What else?
PD: Two victories against fluoridation in Australia. The Australian feds are one of the staunchest for fluoridation in the world. These are victories for the people and important ones. We have lots more on allicin, the heart of garlic, which, according to scientists, will slay everything from MRSA to nappy rash to bubonic plague…
ECLUB: Without the pong?
PD: With the minimum of olfactory stimulus, Brian. Peter Josling's book, Allicin - The Heart of Garlic, is a must, by the way. Think of allicin as nature's natural antibiotic without the dangers to the immune system.
ECLUB: What about Kylie?
PD: I pray the correct information finds its way to her entourage and she has time to read it. Folks, if there are any of you unsure of the best approach to avoiding or treating cancer, click here and take the mini-tour, then read my book, Cancer: Why We're Still Dying to Know the Truth. How much better not to have to deal with cancer in the first place.
ECLUB: What else?
PD: We have a piece on the connection between bullying and watching TV. How to avoid morning sickness using ginger. More research on the dangers of mobile phones and the surprising cure (see my notes on the article). A piece out of Water - The Stuff of Life, what the wet stuff will do for your parched, dehydrated body, yadda, yadda, etc. etc.
ECLUB: How's the new tour going?
PD: We're loving it. How's your attitude, Brian?
ECLUB: Ask the wife. She gets the pay-check.
PD: I'm never going to be out of work then, am I?

A No Vote is a Vote for Repatriation of Power

As one campaign closes, another opens. The general election has determined Parliament's composition; but we must now address ourselves to the larger question of Parliament's powers. Are we to be an independent country living under our own laws, or part of a larger European polity? As Edward Heath put it more than 30 years ago: who governs Britain?

Some readers may feel that we - and the campaign against the European constitution, which was launched yesterday - are being too alarmist. After all, the EU has trundled along for decades now without extirpating the nation state. Successive treaties have enlarged the powers of Brussels, but the United Kingdom is still here. Will this latest initiative be any different?

Yes. The constitution is not simply the latest in a series of treaties: it alters the legal basis of the EU. On the day it enters into force, all existing treaties will be dissolved. The EU will cease to be an association of states, deriving its authority from its constituent members, and instead draw its legitimacy directly from its own founding charter. It will acquire almost every attribute recognised by international law as a feature of statehood: legal personality, treaty-making powers, a head of state, external frontiers, accredited diplomats.

Anyone who thinks that we exaggerate should read the text (available online at www.euabc.com). You need only look at the first dozen or so clauses to get a sense of what the constitution is about: "The Constitution shall have primacy over the law of the Member States" (Article I-6); "The Member States shall exercise their competence to the extent that the Union has not exercised, or has decided to cease exercising, its competence" (Article I-12). Then comes the list of areas where Brussels is to have jurisdiction: transport, energy, agriculture, fisheries, trade competition, asylum, immigration, social policy, employment law, foreign affairs, defence, space exploration, justice and home affairs. No wonder Tony Blair spent the election blathering about schools and hospitals: they're pretty much all he'll have left.

This point is not made flippantly. European integration was a malign if unremarked presence throughout the recent campaign. There it sat like Banquo's ghost, invisible to most voters, but shaking its gory locks at the party leaders, who knew that they had to draw up their manifestos within the parameters allowed by EU law. There was a spectacular illustration of this when Michael Howard pledged that a future Conservative government would set an upper limit for immigrants and a separate quota for refugees, only to be told that such a policy was not compatible with the EU's "Area of Freedom, Security and Justice" (1984-style nomenclature is very much a feature of Brussels life).

Equally, no party could promise to revive our countryside (because of the CAP), rescue our fishing communities (because of the CFP) or deregulate our labour markets (because of the social chapter). No party could take up this newspaper's proposal to replace VAT with a local sales tax.

Ah yes, say the supporters of the constitution, but these are not new grievances: they mainly derive from past treaties. Perhaps so. But the fact that the constitution entrenches a number of things that we already disliked is hardly an argument for voting "yes". When Mr Blair says that this is a referendum on the wider question of Britain's relationship with Brussels, he is right. Since this is the first time that we have been asked our opinion in 30 years, it is only natural that we should wish to express a view on the various transfers of power to the EU that have happened over that period. But having thus defined the contest, Mr Blair must accept the logic of his own position. A "no" vote would not simply be a vote for the status quo: it would be a vote for the wholesale repatriation of power from Brussels and the restoration of parliamentary sovereignty. If he cannot bring himself to accept this, Mr Blair will surely have to make way for someone who can.

The Battle For Britain
Number-Plate Protest
by Phillip Day

The EU, as most know, has been introduced into Britain since the 1970's drip by drip and sold to the public as a free trade arrangement. It is a far cry from that. Most still are not aware of the Draconian effects the EU has had on our pockets. Council Tax hikes, VAT, not to mention the EU's endemic corruption and the £30 million, raised in taxes, paid to the Brussels machine EVERY DAY for no commensurate benefit. Instead, our agriculture has been devastated, our fishing industry and North Sea oil resources shared out among our 'new partners' in the EU. And now Brussels wants your vitamins and supplements too!

Soon, the citizens of Britain may be called upon to vote whether to accept the new European Union constitution, which will henceforth take precedence over Britain's centuries-old way of life. If the EU constitution is voted in, no escape from it in the future has been either legally or politically provided for. Britain simply will become one of many new provinces in the new United States of Europe to be plundered, even as she is now, to pay for this new superpower.

All citizens are urged by the Campaign for Truth in Europe (CTE) to vote a resounding 'NO'! To this attempt to subvert our sovereignty and hand over our governance to a foreign power.

Want a fun way of rallying support to send the Brusselscrats packing?

Many British number-plates now sport the letters 'GB' in a blue strip surmounted by a yellow ring of stars. Last time I checked, this was not my nation's flag! If the blue causes you to see red, simply send a self-addressed stamped envelope, together with a donation (however meek) to CTE's Battle for Britain Fund, and we will return you two Union Jack stickers, which just happen to be slightly bigger than the EU flag on your number-plate!

Donations over £10 will receive a free copy of CTE's video, 'The Real Face of the European Union' (shipping included). Donations over £20 will receive a free copy of the video plus Ashley Mote's masterful literary indictment of the European Union, 'Vigilance'.

Please note: CTE is NOT a political party. We are devoted to a free and independent Britain, trading with Europe, not ruled by Europe. Your support and participation are greatly appreciated.

Tillack Ruling Hands Ace to Commission
by Andrew Rettman

The European Court of Justice has given the European Commission the all clear to "go fishing" in journalists' files whenever it likes, according to the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ).

The move could turn off potential sources and whistle-blowers from acting on their conscience for fear of discovery and reprisal, the EFJ's secretary general, Adrian White explained to EUobserver.

"It's a shocking invasion of journalistic rights," he said.

The court's recent (April 19) decision to quash an appeal by Hans-Martin Tillack, the former Brussels correspondent of Stern magazine, prompted the remarks.

Tillack Appeal Fails
Mr Tillack had appealed against an earlier (15 October 2004) Court of First Instance judgement absolving the European Commission's anti-fraud office, OLAF, from inciting the Belgian police to raid the reporter's flat last March.

The appeal also asked the European Court of Justice to block OLAF from seeing over 1,000 pages of documents and thousands of emails seized in the raid.

Mr Tillack alleges that OLAF workers sparked the raid, by telling Belgian police that he had bribed their colleagues and was about to flee to the US.

"This ruling is a licence to lie for EU officials," he said.

The investigation is ongoing, but the Belgian prosecutors' office has not brought charges against the journalist to date.

Hans-Martin Tillack and Stern now plan to take the Belgian authorities to the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to try and recover his work.

Commission Stands Back
The European Commission has not asked to see the seized documents so far.
"For the moment the question does not arise, as the matter is still under investigation," a spokeswoman for the administrative affairs commissioner, Siim Kallas, said.

"Press freedom and the right of journalists to protect their sources are enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights. But press freedom is not granted without limitation," she added.

"If a journalist himself becomes a suspect or is linked to an investigation, it is for the individual national authorities to decide which measures can be justified and whether they can be justified."

The spokeswoman added that under EU staff regulations, officials are obliged to blow the whistle if they see evidence of wrongdoing.

EFJ Pushes for New Law
But the EFJ is unhappy with the status quo.

"The fact that they have this power is unacceptable," the federation's secretary general indicated. "The OLAF people are now carrying on as normal, retiring and so forth, while a cloud continues to hang over Mr Tillack's career."

The EFJ is pushing for a Europe-wide freedom of information law that would give journalists sources and whistle-blowers a fundamental right to confidentiality. The European Commission has not taken up the proposal.

But Belgium tightened up laws protecting its journalists late last year.

MEPs Veto Moves to End Fraud Scandals
by David Rennie in Brussels

Members of the European Parliament rejected moves yesterday to clean up scandal-ridden arrangements for their travel allowances and expenses. Their decision prompted anger and disbelief from British MEPs, who voted for proposed reforms.

In a series of votes carried by a margin of six to four at a full session of the parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs resisted proposals for audits of their accounts and turned down calls to impose sanctions on those found to have defrauded the taxpayer.

The votes "gave an all-clear to embezzlement", said Chris Davies MEP, the leader of the British Liberal Democrats in the parliament.

Mr Davies expressed particular disappointment after his fellow MEPs voted to continue a trust-based system for payments into the parliament's private pension scheme.

The scheme is wide open to fraud. MEPs who choose to join can pay up to £664 a month into their pension plans, with their contribution deducted from their office expense account, not from their salary. In theory, MEPs then reimburse their office accounts for pension contributions but no checks are carried out.

"I reimburse my contribution every month but there is no need to present receipts for office expenses and there's no audit. You could use the allowance for any purpose you like," said Mr Davies.

The parliament also voted to maintain its travel allowance scheme. By buying cheaper fares in advance, or using budget airlines, a British MEP could easily make up to £500 profit in a week.

Is TV Morphing Your Child Into a Bully?

Just because a TV show or movie is made for kids, doesn't mean it's good for them, explained the lead researcher of a study that linked television to aggressive behavior in children. The study revealed that younger children who watch television are more likely to become bullies, mainly due to the increasingly violent nature of animated videos and cartoons.

Researchers compared existing data from a national study of more than 1,250 4-year-olds to follow-up reports with their mothers later on (between ages 6-11), specifically to learn if their kids had become crueler to others or had indeed become bullies. The numbers tallied are shocking:

Four-year-olds were 25 percent more likely to become bullies if they watched merely the average daily amount of television--3.5 hours.

Kids who watched eight hours of TV a day were 200 percent more likely to become bullies.

Thirteen percent of the kids surveyed eventually became bullies.
Violent animated shows are causing kids to become "desensitized" to violence. Therefore, researchers suggested parents follow the American Academy of Pediatric guidelines, which recommend no TV for children under 2 and no more than two hours of viewing time a day for older kids.

Aside from bullying, other potential negative influences of watching too much TV include obesity, inattention and other types of aggression.

A Ray of Hope
Yet unlike other studies that focus on TV viewing, researchers of this study found that in addition to eliminating or severely limiting viewing time, kids were almost one-third less likely to become bullies if they received:

Cognitive stimulation--exposing children to new ideas by reading aloud to them or taking trips to museums.

Emotional support from their parents--talking regularly as well as eating meals together.
Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine April 2005; 159(4): 384-388
New Scientist April 5, 2005

DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT: These findings add fuel to the fire of a Kaiser Family Foundation study that exposed some startling numbers about the amount of time kids spend in front of the television. It's not only to watch mind-numbing fare filled with fast-food commercials but also to play video games and eat their meals. And just like the study above points out, the Kaiser study highlighted the fact that children's exposure to violent video games and TV has been found to encourage aggression.

In fact, a number of studies have proved time and time again how detrimental TV's influence is on your child: One study that involved more than 700 families found that 14-year-old boys who watched relatively more television were more likely to have assaulted someone or committed any serious act of aggression by the time they were 22 years old. A similar pattern was found among females, but the relationship was much weaker.

Another study found that violence in the media can have a profound effect on the behavior of children and teens and that TV violence was associated with aggression among children as young as 4 years.

Researchers involved in another study suggested physicians and parents understand that popular (E-rated) video games may be a source of exposure to violence and other unexpected content for children and that games may reward the players for violent actions.

Preschoolers who watch television violence and play violent video games are more likely to show high levels of aggression and antisocial behavior than those not exposed, according to another study.

The studies go on and on, which is why it is important to...

Take a Proactive Step Now!
Many of us fail to appreciate the enormous influence we have on our children's lives. Kids are easy and impressionable targets; therefore, it's up to us to step in and place some serious limitations on the amount of time they are allowed to watch TV.

All it takes is one simple step: Turn off the television (or video games) and encourage your kids to take part in a productive activity like physically active play or reading. There are far too many things to do in life--places to visit, books to read, sports to play--to waste so much of your life sitting in front of a box.

Fluoride - Two Victories in Australia

Dear All,

Two victories to report in Australia, one small one in NSW and one large one in Queensland.

In NSW, the new Warrumbungle Shire Council has decided to overturn plans by the former administrator to fluoridate town water supplies in Coonabarabran, Coolah, Mendooran, Dunnedoo, Binnaway and Baradine (see report below).

In Queensland, the parliament voted 71 to 6 to oppose a private member's bill which would have made fluoridation mandatory in the state of Queensland. While this vote is very exciting, having read the speeches in Hansard, it is not all good news. Many of the MPs who voted against the bill are actually for fluoridation but they don't want to usurp the right of local communities to vote on it. So we shouldn't be surprised if down the road the ruling party introduces financial incentives to "encourage" communities to fluoridateMoreover, I was appalled how easily MPs are swept away by the heavy use of endorsements from WHO, NHMRC, CDC etc. Don't they have aides to help them sort out the wheat from the chaff on issues like this?

The MP who introduced the private member's bill, Mr. Langbroek, is a dentist. His statements to the House jump him to the top of the Hall of Shame. One of the things he said:

"Some members talked about the flood of e-mails coming onto their desk about the poisonous effect of fluoride. To those members I say: did one of those e-mails come from the Australian Medical Association? Did one of those e-mails come from the Australian Dental Association or its American counterpart or its British counterpart? No. They would have come from members of the community who have been infected by the conspiracy theories and piffle of people who are either insanely misguided on the science of the issue or have some sick desire to see children suffer at the hands of the dentist's drill."

Where was Mr. Langbroek when I was in Queensland last October? He could have confronted my "piffle" in person! However, like all the other promoters of fluoridation in Queensland he ran for cover rather than debate the issue at a public meting or on ABC radio, or on another call-in radio program. My carefully referenced scientific arguments were met with an earth shattering silence - until, of course, I left.

However, Mr Langbroek issued a challenge which might result in some interesting national repercussions, when he said:

"But if someone showed me a community with fluoride where the disease rate is higher than another community without fluoride, it would have to be removed and never be used again. That is the argument about the rest of Australia to all those people who say it is a bad thing. In that case, the rest of Australia needs to be told and it should be removed…".

We have made a copy of the debate published in Hansard. It's rather long and I chose not to circulate it to everyone. If you would like a copy in an open file, please let me know and I will send it to you. (www.fluoridealert.org.)

Meanwhile, please pass along your congratulations to one of those "who have been infected by the conspiracy theories and piffle of people who are either insanely misguided on the science of the issue or have some sick desire to see children suffer at the hands of the dentist's drill", namely "Bill Kilvert" <bkilvert@bigpond.com> , who I am sure will send it around to other members of this prestigious band of warriors!

FAN CAMPAIGN Bulletin #218

New Council Overturns Fluoridation Plan

Fluoride will not be added to water supplies in the Warrumbungle Shire, west of Tamworth.

The new Warrumbungle Shire Council has decided to overturn plans to fluoridate town water supplies in Coonabarabran, Coolah, Mendooran, Dunnedoo, Binnaway and Baradine.

Administrator Bruce Rindflesh made a decision to fluoridate local supplies at February's council meeting.

But the new council adopted a recession motion at yesterday's council meeting.
Australia : NSW : Tamworth Friday, 22 April 2005

PROF. PAUL CONNETT'S COMMENT: With every passing day we receive phone calls and /or emails telling us about yet another city in the US or Canada where local officials are asking serious questions about their fluoridation program. As in this case from Eustis, Florida (see below), local officials are doing their homework by going to our website.

This is exciting and I pray that this groundswell will turn into an avalanche. What is great about this is that the proponents have nowhere they can go to deal with this. Their stale tactics of citing "authority" and "denigrating opponents" simply doesn't work once someone with an open mind starts to review the literature. After all these tactics were developed precisely to keep people away from the literature!

Now that Michael has done such a splendid job of making all the health data so easy to find and use, it will make it even easier for officials to get a quick education. So, please, if you haven't done so already, check out http://www.fluoridedalert.org/health and see for yourself how easy it is to get solid information on all our health concerns.

Talking about an "open mind", I thought of a phrase after I sent out the bulletin on the outrageous promotion of fluoride tablets by the Harvard Medical School. It goes as follows:

"I would rather have on my side an undergraduate with an open mind than a Harvard professor with a closed one."

As difficult as it is, keeping an open mind, especially on an issue for which you have always believed that one side was right and the other wrong, is absolutely essential in education. It is particularly crucial in science, "where an ugly fact can destroy a beautiful theory" (was it Pascal who said that?).

Retaining an open mind is the handmaiden to scientific integrity.

The Eustis meeting tonight will probably be flooded with white coats assuring people that the "authorities" say fluoridation is all fine and dandy. I hope the councilors will put their authority to the test and challenge them a) to debate the issue in public and b) spend a few hours gathering the answers to the 50 Reasons mentioned in the article. As they say, put your mouth where your money is!

Does it Work? Garlic

Love its pungency or hate it, garlic has recently been portrayed as a cure for all our ills, writes Thea Jourdan

Garlic has been hailed as a remedy for the common cold and, more remarkably, as a weapon in the fight against MRSA, and even a "performance enhancer" for men in the bedroom. This month, the South African health minister caused controversy by claiming that garlic can help fight AIDS. So what does it really do?

Heart disease: according to the latest research, presented at the American Heart Association meeting in Washington DC by scientists from the University of Medicine in Berlin, garlic can reduce the risk of heart disease. In laboratory tests, it was shown to reduce dramatically the build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries.

MRSA: allicin, a compound derived from garlic, which has antibacterial properties, has been used to treat patients with the deadly superbug.

Cholesterol: numerous studies in Europe and America have shown that garlic reduces harmful cholesterol in the blood; garlic supplements can reduce bad cholesterol levels by a tenth.

In the bedroom: garlic helps to improve the flow of blood to the extremities. Dr Gunter Siegel, who headed a research team in Berlin, says: "Garlic can help with impotence caused by heart disease. A good flow of blood to the groin means that a man should not have a problem with sex."

Stomach ulcers: studies suggest that garlic helps to protect against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, the leading cause of stomach ulcers. And, individuals who eat lots of garlic have a lower incidence of stomach cancer.

Colds: research has confirmed what our grannies always knew, that people who regularly eat garlic suffer from fewer colds. Anecdotal evidence shows that taking large amounts of garlic at the onset of a cold can reduce the time taken to recover. A traditional remedy is to crush a clove of garlic in to warm milk.

Pregnancy: gynaecologists at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital have found that mothers-to-be who eat garlic boost the birth weight of small babies. They also discovered that it cut the risk of pre-eclampsia.

Toothache: for centuries, garlic has been used to ease the pang of toothache. Traditionally, a clove is crushed to release the allicin, and is then placed next to the tooth. Sometimes the garlic is used in conjunction with cloves or clove oil.

How does it work? Ajoenes and dithiins are among the most active chemical compounds found in fresh garlic. Ajoenes have been shown to reduce blood clotting and work against tumour cells. These compounds also act as potent antifungals and have been shown to inhibit the growth of a range of common fungal infections, including thrush and athlete's foot.

Must it be eaten fresh? After it has been peeled and chopped, fresh garlic quickly loses its potency, because the beneficial chemicals are unstable and are destroyed within hours. Fresh young garlic bulbs, which are in season during the summer, are the most powerful health boosters, although too much raw garlic will give you bad breath.
The Daily Telegraph 16th May, 2005

PHILLIP DAY'S COMMENT: The above article is very heartening and gives an indication of garlic's versatility. Allicin products can be used greatly to increase the potency of the garlic 'hit' without the bulk of the attendant odour. Garlic liquids and other supplements have been found to produce next to no allicin once in the stomach due to the hydrochloric acid action. Stabilised allicin, however, is most effective and now available in sprays, creams and capsules. For more information:

Garlic Fights Deadly Hypertension

Bad breath may be the price to pay for warding off high blood pressure in the lungs. According to research on rats, an ingredient in garlic was found to prevent pulmonary hypertension, a potentially deadly type of high blood pressure in the arteries that bring blood to the lungs.

The magic ingredient: Allicin.
Researchers explain the garlic ingredient allicin likely prevents pulmonary hypertension by causing the constricted blood vessels to relax, and by preventing damage to the blood vessels.

Positive, Preventative Effects of Allicin
To determine the ingredient's preventative effects, scientists first increased the risk of pulmonary hypertension in rats using a drug that triggers the constriction of the arteries feeding the lungs.

Some of the rats were given a powdered form of garlic that contained allicin; others ate boiled garlic that was void of the ingredient (it dissipates when exposed to heat through boiling). After three weeks, researchers found:

High blood pressure in the lungs was prevented in the rats that received allicin.
Rats that ate the boiled garlic developed pulmonary hypertension, proving allicin as the key ingredient.

How Will These Findings Affect Humans?
For humans, pulmonary hypertension can lead to potentially fatal complications in the heart and blood vessels. And while consuming two cloves of garlic every day would equal that of the rats' dosage in the experiment, additional research needs to be done before doctors are able to recommend garlic to patients who have an increased risk of pulmonary hypertension.

Allicin Effective Against MRSA Superbugs
Powerful New Evidence

A compound extracted from garlic is effective against even the most antibiotic-resistant strains of MRSA, the killer hospital superbug, and can cure patients with MRSA-infected wounds within days, according to new research by microbiologist Dr Ron Cutler of the University of East London (UEL).

In a paper to be published in the New Year, Dr Cutler, an expert in the antimicrobial properties of plant extracts, claims that allicin - a compound that occurs naturally in garlic kills not only established varieties of MRSA, but also destroys the new generation of super-superbugs that have evolved resistance to Vancomycin and Glycopeptides, the powerful antibiotics widely considered to be the last line of defence against MRSA.

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) now causes an estimated 5,000 deaths in UK hospitals each year mainly through secondary infection of surgical wounds. Though MRSA organisms can live harmlessly in humans and are carried in the nasal passages and on the skin, they can cause fatal infection in immune-suppressed patients, the elderly, the young and those with surgical implants.

Doctors have become increasingly alarmed over the past few months by the emergence in UK hospitals of new generations of resistant strains of MRSA known as VISAs, and GISAs (Vancomycin or Glycopeptide resistant Staphylococcus aureus). MRSA has also become endemic in many hospitals, especially in London and the South-East, prompting the NHS to review its hygiene procedures.

Dr Cutler, who recently proved that allicin destroys the MRSA microbe in laboratory trials, has now teamed up with a new company, Allicin International, to develop topical treatments to prevent MRSA infection. The group have developed a nasal cream, oral capsules and soaps that have proved effective against both MRSA and GISA.

In partnership with colleagues in the NHS, Dr Cutler is now embarking on a major clinical trial involving around two hundred volunteers, including patients at several hospitals in London and the South East.

Dr Cutler said: "The trials we have conducted so far show that this formulation is highly effective against MRSA and it could save many lives. This finding is backed up by initial findings from a number of recent case studies. We have been trying to set up a clinical trial for many months now and, at last, we have secured funding from sources including Allicin International.

MRSA is causing a genuine crisis in our hospital system in Britain and worldwide. Antibiotics are increasingly ineffective, but we do have a powerful natural ally. Plant compounds have evolved over millions of years as chemical defence agents against infection. Garlic has been used in medicine for centuries and it should be no surprise that it is effective against this very modern infection."

The research on the laboratory effects of allicin on GISA was presented in part at the Institute of Biomedical Scientists congress in Birmingham, October 2003, and is being prepared for publication in the Journal of Biomedical Science to appear in the New Year. A full clinical study involving the use of allicin to reduce nasal carriage in healthy volunteers, involving hospitals from London and the South East, is underway. Initial results are due to be published in summer 2004.

Case Study: Deborah's Story
Deborah Brown (34), a probation service officer who lives in Rainham, Kent, contracted MRSA after a major spinal operation in November 2000. The painful wounds on her spine failed to heal despite constant applications of both oral antibiotics and creams, which also failed to reduce the levels of MRSA in her tissue.

In December 2002, Deborahs mother Pauline contacted Dr Cutler after seeing an item on TV about MRSA and received a course of Allimax cream and capsules by post. Within two months, the MRSA had mostly cleared from Deborah's tissues and the wounds had begun to heal, allowing an operation to remove her spinal supports to be carried out in June 2003.

Deborah said: "The effect of the treatment was dramatic - I am making a good recovery now but it was really awful at the time. Having weeping wounds on my back that never healed for two years was incredibly painful and I became increasingly depressed as the MRSA didn't respond to repeated courses of antibiotics. If my case helps to show that allicin works against MRSA then I am glad that something good might come of it."

It Will Work Out Fine and
I'll be Back With You Soon, says Kylie
by Hugh Davies and Nick Squires in Darwin

Kylie Minogue, the 36-year-old pop singer, announced yesterday that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, but promised her fans that she would be back on stage as soon as she could.

The 5ft 1in performer said in a statement: "Hopefully it will all work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon."

She cancelled the Australian and Far Eastern leg of her world tour and will stay in Australia for treatment, which is reported to be starting today. She also called off her appearance performance at the Glastonbury Festival next month, a date she had long looked forward to after two failed attempts to be accepted by the organisers.

From her emergence as Charlene, the mechanic in the soap Neighbours, and derision as Australia's "singing budgie", Kylie has fought her way through many rocky patches in the past 18 years, constantly having to reinvent herself to keep pace with changing tastes - from bubble gum music queen to club diva.

She has notched up 37 hit singles in Britain and the cancer diagnosis comes at the peak of her popularity, with more than 300,000 people watching her UK concerts earlier this month.

While she sold out seven performances at the vast Earls Court arena in London - more even than Madonna - there were tell-tale signs of anxiety. Critics said that while her act was suitably spectacular, she seemed tired and distracted, with no real connection to an adoring audience.

It is understood she underwent a biopsy last week, possibly when she was still in London, before returning at the weekend to her home city of Melbourne, where doctors told her she had "early breast cancer". Immediate hospital treatment was ordered.

Last night her parents, Ron and Carol, were comforting her at their home in the suburb of Canterbury.

Her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago. Kylie said recently: "My thoughts are never far from him. I love him dearly and he and my mum have been my rock throughout my life."

With them was her boyfriend of two years, Olivier Martinez, 39, the French actor.
Her sister, Danni, said: "The news is very upsetting, although as the cancer has been diagnosed at such an early stage we are all very optimistic that everything will be OK."
Michael Gudinski, her promoter, said the news was a huge shock, but she was fit and strong. He said: "She's got a few tough weeks ahead of her. The one thing I know about Kylie is she's a fighter."

He said that the diagnosis was a lesson to all women to have regular checks. "Thank God she has been. You have to find these things early."

Kylie has followed a punishing schedule. Her planned "Showgirl" trek across the globe was to have involved 60 performances, a 16in waist corset, a £1 million set and a string of costume changes as she moved from her breakthrough hit, a cover of Little Eva's Locomotion, through I Believe In You, her collaboration with the exotic Scissor Sisters, to her classic dance hit Can't Get You Out Of My Head.

She had been scheduled to perform in Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, all of which have now been cancelled.

Anne Charleston, who played the character Madge alongside Kylie in Neighbours and also had breast cancer in her late 30s, said on hearing the news: "It was like a stab to the heart because it happened to me at that same age. If it is diagnosed early enough it can be treated and I think it's a good thing she's in Australia with her family. They are very close. I think she'll come through it fine, but it's an emotional thing having something like this because you go into the operation not knowing quite what's going to happen."

One of Kylie's closest friends is the Australian singer Olivia Newton John, who recovered from breast cancer diagnosed in 1992 when she was 44.

Kylie is the second international pop star to be diagnosed with the disease in as many years. Anastacia, the American singer, underwent treatment when she was 31 after her doctor insisted that she have a mammogram during a routine check-up.

She said: "He saved my life." Anastacia made a full recovery, touring Europe last year to promote an album.

However, Caron Keating, the former Blue Peter presenter, died of breast cancer at 41, as did Sir Paul McCartney's first wife, Linda, at 56.

Three years ago, one of Kylie's bras sold for £2,400 in London to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

Since wearing gold hotpants for her Spinning Around video, she has gained reverence in some quarters for her bottom - and the hotpants, deemed culturally significant, are now on display in Australia.

She has also had a series of high-profile relationships, dating Michael Hutchence, the leader of INXS, the Australian rock band in 1989, who was found hanged in a Sydney hotel in 1997, and later the singer Lenny Kravitz.

Another ex-boyfriend, Jason Donovan, who is in London starring in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, said last night: "Kylie is a strong woman who will fight this battle on every front."

Pete Waterman, the producer, who with songwriter Mike Stock helped to launch Kylie's pop career in Britain, said: "I am shocked to hear this news, particularly since Mike and I had a very poignant reunion with her at her Earls Court gig, where there were a lot of hugs and kisses."

Sir Elton John sent a message of love, wishing Kylie a "speedy recovery".

Calculate Your Child's Risk of Mercury
Poisoning From Vaccines

Whether the rising rates of autism in the United States can be attributed to the mercury-laden vaccine preservative thimerosal is a hotly debated topic. But according to at least one expert, Dr. David Ayoub, the director of the Prairie Collaborative for Immunization, the evidence is clear that mercury is in fact playing a large role in the autism epidemic.

Dr. Ayoub said that numerous experimental, epidemiological and biochemical research studies have shown beyond a doubt that mercury is "directly linked the development of autism spectrum disorders and is significantly toxic to the gastrointestinal, immunological, metabolic and neurobiological systems in children."

He believes that, rather than devoting more research efforts to proving this link, research should aim to find methods to remove mercury from the body and repair damage it has caused.

Mercury and the Flu Vaccine: Still a Major Threat
Of the vaccines today that still contain mercury, the flu vaccine is the biggest concern, according to Dr. Ayoub. About 80 percent of flu vaccines contain as much as 25 micrograms of mercury per dose. The EPA's safe limit for mercury is 0.1 mcg/kg, so everyone who gets the flu vaccine receives an overdose of mercury. You would have to weigh at least 550 pounds to receive a flu shot and be within the safe federal exposure limits for mercury.

Further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended in 2004 that pregnant women and young infants should be among those who receive the flu vaccine, which further exposes fetuses and young children to mercury. In the case of pregnant women, the benefit of flu vaccination was minimal (preventing one to two hospitalizations for every 1,000 pregnant women vaccinated), yet the risks to the unborn infant could be significant.

When a pregnant woman receives the flu vaccine, the fetus receives several hundred times more mercury than federal agencies say is safe for adults. Even the vaccine manufacturers admit the flu vaccine hasn't been adequately tested. The insert on one such vaccine (Fluzone) even stated:

"Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Influenza Virus Vaccine. It is not known whether Influenza Virus Vaccine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity."

Mercury-Laden Vaccines Approved Because of Conflicts of Interest
Both the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have potential conflicts of interest with the vaccine makers, as do doctors who work with the companies. In fact, policy decisions are made by physician advisory panels whose members are often tied financially to the drug companies they are regulating. Some interesting points:

· The CDC branch that oversees vaccine safety has a budget of about $30 million; the branch that promotes vaccines has a $1 billion budget.
· About 60 percent of the FDA advisory members who voted to approve the poisonous rotavirus vaccine had financial ties the drug's makers.
· About 50 percent of the CDC members were also tied to the rotavirus makers. Some 85 percent of Clinical Practice Guideline authors have ties to the drug companies, and many are not disclosed.

How Much Mercury Has Your Child Received?
The National Vaccine Information Center has released a mercury calculator that can help you determine how much mercury your child has received (or will receive) from vaccinations. You simply enter the weight of your child and choose the brand name or manufacturer of the vaccine, and the calculator will let you know if the mercury levels have exceeded the EPA's safe standard.

Are there treatments available for autism? Chelation therapies to remove mercury from the body are among the most talked about ways to treat autism in children, Ayoub says.
Independent Media TV March 9, 2005

DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT: If the above study doesn't cause your blood to boil, I don't know what will. Up until the last few years it was never recommended for infants to get the flu vaccine. Now it is mandated, and last year nearly 70 percent of helpless infants were assaulted with a vaccine that is loaded with mercury.

And why was this vaccine given to these (your?) children? Because of pure, simple, corporate greed and rampant conflict of interest at the FDA. Sixty percent of the "experts" on the vaccine advisory committee had ties to the vaccine industry. This makes the Vioxx scandal that killed 55,000 people like a picnic. This is most likely one of the worst scams ever implemented on the American public. The potential to negatively impact the public is profound and beyond belief.

We won't see the majority of the side effects from this insane and greed-inspired activity for many years, perhaps decades, and even then it will be difficult for many to make the connection. It is nearly incomprehensible to calculate the damage that is being done to the future health of our country. How can you possibly inject a central nervous system poison into immature infants at doses hundreds of times that allowed for adults and not expect some type of consequence?

I feel so strongly about this issue that last week I partnered with Dr. Tenpenny to offer an audio course for the fall. We will also be publishing her book on the flu vaccine, but it will likely not be published until next year.

Aside from the devastating future complications, there are also immediate concerns. As Dr. Ayoub said in the article, we are certainly seeing some of the acute and disastrous complications of this policy right now:

"I can state that the certainty of the science supporting mercury as a major cause of autism is probably more overpowering than the science behind any other disease process that I studied dating back to medical school ... I think [autism] a disease that affects more individuals than AIDS or cancer, in previously normal infants and children has created a sense of urgency amongst researchers."

One of the main culprits today is the flu vaccine--which still contains mercury, despite all that's known about its risks. Although summer is approaching and the flu is probably one of the furthest things from your mind, please keep in mind my article Alternatives to the Flu Vaccine for the next flu season.

If you're at all uncertain about the damage mercury and vaccines continue to do, I urge you to review an article I ran about how it can ruin your life. Those of you with kids will also want to check out the easy-to-use mercury calculator from the National Vaccine Information Center that will tell you just how much mercury your kids will be getting from their vaccinations (and kids and adults can use the calculator on the GotMercury.org site to find out how much mercury you're getting from the fish you eat).

The Cell Phone Industry: Big Tobacco 2.0?
by Molly Wood, senior editor,

So, there's this incredibly popular product that has widespread consumer use and a massive marketing presence. Nearly everyone uses it, and it has very high social acceptance, even though some people find it annoying when it's used in public. It's highly habit-forming; people who use the product on a regular basis find it almost impossible to live without.
Unfortunately, studies start to appear showing that the product might be harmful to its users--even cancer-causing. The product's manufacturers deny the presence of any danger and even spend millions of dollars trying to discredit the research that points to problems. Then, an insider emerges, seemingly with proof that the product could be dangerous. The industry agrees to publish warning data about the product, but continues to maintain that the product itself is safe for use. Lawsuits against the product's manufacturers are filed, but all are dismissed. Industry analysts know that any case that does succeed could start a domino effect of future lawsuits, which keeps the industry determined to maintain that the product is harmless, despite increasing evidence to the contrary.

Sound familiar?
Well, put down your lighter, I'm talking about cell phones. I've already maintained that I don't like the cell phone industry's iron-clad control over phone releases and pricing, its ever-lengthening contracts, and the annoying habit it has of crippling Bluetooth phones so that I can't use them the way I want to. But it takes only a few minutes of looking into the cell phone radiation quagmire before I start to think, man, these guys have Big Tobacco 2.0 written all over them. Actually, I'm not the first to think of it, but a recent article in the University of Washington alumni magazine indicates that the behaviors aren't going away, even as the potentially damning research continues to mount.

OK, I know the obvious differences: I'm sure cell phone manufacturers are not deliberately making their products more addictive, for example--although they are, of course, always offering new and improved services and ever-increasing buckets of minutes, which can't help but encourage us to use our phones more and more frequently. But, just as Big Tobacco did, the cell phone industry seems bound and determined to thwart and deny any suggestion that its product might be dangerous.

A history of bad news
For example, in 1994, University of Washington bioengineering professors Henry Lai and Narendra Singh found that the DNA in rats' brains was damaged after two hours of exposure to levels of microwave radiation considered safe by the government. When Lai and Singh published the research, a leaked memo from Motorola's head of global strategy, Norm Sandler, talked about ways to minimize damage by undermining their research, with Sandler writing, "I think that we have sufficiently war-gamed the Lai/Singh issue." Ouch. Worse, research biologist Jerry Phillips, who was paid by Motorola to conduct similar testing, says he was able to duplicate Lai and Singh's findings, but was then asked not to publish the research and was subsequently shunned by the company. Motorola says it told Phillips that his findings needed clarification, and the industry still maintains that Lai and Singh's results have never been duplicated and can't be considered legitimate.

The biggest Russell Crowe-style insider in this case, though, is Dr. George Carlo, who was hired by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association to head up a $28 million research program into possible health effects from cellular phones. Unfortunately, he now says his findings show an increased rate of brain cancer deaths, development of tumors, and genetic damage among heavy cell phone users. He wrote this letter of concern to the president of AT&T Corporation and later went public with his findings after what he considered to be neglect by the industry. He's since broken with the industry, become a vocal critic, and coauthored a book called Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age--so you can tell he's on the "cell phones could cause cancer" side of things.

Meanwhile, more studies keep coming, and they seem to be getting worse. A study funded by the European Union reported last December that radio waves from mobile phones do, definitively, damage DNA and other cells in the body--and that the damage extended to the next generation of cells. Even though mutated cells are considered a possible cause of cancer, the UK National Radiological Protection Board said that since the study didn't show that the damage definitely led to disease, consumers shouldn't worry too much about the findings.

Uh, right. In the meantime, the report recommended that children use mobile phones only in emergency situations. You know, just in case. How reassuring.

The cell phone industry hasn't commissioned another large-scale study--at least not publicly--since its fateful encounter with Dr. Carlo--and why would they? They're in a catch-22. It's a multibillion dollar industry, and they simply can't afford to find out, definitively, that cell phones are dangerous. Worse, just like the tobacco companies, if they start issuing warnings and precautionary tales now, it'll look like they knew all along that the radio waves were dangerous, opening them up to major liability claims. They've already dodged one big, big bullet--an $800 million lawsuit against Motorola and cell phone carriers was thrown out in 2002, with the judge ruling that there wasn't sufficient evidence for trial. Since then, neurologist Dr. Christopher Newman, who filed the lawsuit, has died of brain cancer.

Listen, I use a cell phone, and I'm not trying to scare the bejesus out of everyone. But I do use a headset when I'm talking for any long period of time, and I carry that sucker in my purse, not my pocket. (I know you guys don't have that luxury, but reconsider the briefcase, OK?) And if you're shopping for a new phone, you might want to check our cell phone radiation chart to see which ones carry a low dose.

In a few more years, we'll either know for sure that cell phones can cause cancer, or we'll know they can't. I just hope we don't find out the hard way--through subpoenaed documents from cell phone makers and carriers who've been trying to minimize their damages and maximize their profits for more than a decade.

Cancer Kills 7 in Tower of Terror
by Chris Tate

Residents' fear over radio masts on roof

A block of flats bristling with mobile phone and radio masts has been branded the Tower of Terror after a grim series of cancer deaths.

Seven residents have died from the disease in the last 18 months alone, with four receiving treatment for related illnesses. Four others have suffered strokes.

Now panic stricken neighbours are desperate to have the masts removed amid fears the emissions are death rays.

Residents' Association chairman, Bill Marrow, 65, who was recently fitted with a pacemaker, said: "Every time I get a headache these days I'm worried I could be the next person to be struck down. The whole block is extremely concerned. We're all asking who is going to be next?"

Vodaphone and Orange have base stations on top of Liscard House - the block housing 86 flats in Wallasey, Merseyside - and there is also a radio mast for the emergency services.

Health chiefs have launched an investigation and offered residents urgent medical checks. Reg Blackmore, 77, is currently nursing his wife Monica back to health after she too fell victim to the cancer curse. He said, "We love it here. It's been a fantastic place to retire to but we are so worried that our health is suffering with each passing day."

Campaigner Bill accepts there is no scientific proof linking radio masts to cancer; but said: "I fear that one day someone will come along and tell us we were right about this. Until then, it is better to be safe than sorry. We're determined to get these masts removed. We know there is no concrete proof these masts are causing the cancers but it is not fair to have the worry over our heads."

Birkenhead and Wallasey Primary Care Trust confirmed health checks were on offer and they would meet residents' requests for data on cancer rates which they can cross reference with those in their building.

Orange said that it had agreed to co-operate during the probe. A spokesman added: "Radiation coming from our masts is well below the guidelines. But we will do everything possible to allay the residents concern."

No one from Vodafone was available for comment.

PHILLIP DAY'S COMMENT: Here is another burgeoning industry racing ahead without fear of the consequences. I have a much better idea for mobile phones. We should switch the things OFF altogether and get a life. Aside from the radiation, consider that mobiles ringing a dozen times a day increase stress levels by making a spontaneous demand on your time. Friends will be able to contact you if you don't have one; we sometimes forget there was life before Nokia and 'Moto' and that ghastly 'frog' I wish someone would drop into a blender.

Am I seriously suggesting ditching the mobile? Yes! Do I use one? Not for a while now. As for the baleful 3G concept of sending pictures of stuck-out tongues to teenage buddies, resulting in a whole new generation of masts bristling along the ridge, 'nuff said. Keep one in the glove box if you must (a phone not a tongue), to ring in traffic accidents like a good citizen, and then switch the darned thing off and stuff it back in the dark. Email's a serious enough demand, isn't it? If anyone should be using a mobile phone all over the world, it's me! And I don't! And there's peace!

Mobile Phone Risks 'Rise in Rural Areas'
by Jenny Hope

Mobile phones are at the centre of a new health scare after scientists found that users in rural areas may be at higher risk of brain cancer.

Research shows that the chance of developing a malignant brain tumour could be eight times higher in the countryside compared with towns.

And the risk of developing any brain tumour rises fourfold for country-dwellers using mobile phones for five years or more, says a study published today. It is thought the extra risk may be triggered by the higher power output levels from phones used in rural areas.

Base stations tend to be farther apart outside towns which means the phone needs to generate higher radiowave intensity to compensate for the poor signal.

This could result in higher exposure to radiation emissions. Experts say there are no proven health risks to using mobile phones, but they are such a new phenomenon that problems could still emerge. There are 60 million mobile users in Britain - up from 9 million in 1998 - with around one quarter aged under 18.

In the latest study from Sweden, researchers looked at more than 1,400 adults aged 20 to 80 who had been diagnosed with a malignant or benign brain tumour between 1997 and 2000.

The brain cancer patients were compared with a similar number of healthy adults living in the same area. Each group was asked to record their daily use of mobile and cordless phones, according to a report in the journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The researchers at University Hospital in Orebro found there was a higher risk of all types of tumours for people living in rural areas - defined as less than 90,000 inhabitants - compared with towns.

People living in a rural area who had been using a digital mobile phone for more than three years were over three times more likely to be diagnosed with a brain tumour
than those living in urban areas.

There was a fourfold higher risk for those using a digital mobile phone for five or more years in the countryside compared with the towns.

An eightfold increase in malignant brain tumours was found in country dwellers compared to those in towns.

Researchers said the length of time spent on the phone had little impact on the chances of being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Professor Lennart Hardell, who led the research, said the findings should be treated with caution because the actual number of brain tumours in areas classified as rural was very small. "Clearly our results support the notion that exposure may differ between geographical areas," he added.

"But there is no information on the exact difference between geographical areas."

There are 45,000 base stations fitted with antennae or 'masts' situated 200m to 500m apart in towns and up to 5 km apart in rural areas of the UK.

Alasdair Philips, director of the mobile phone emission pressure group Powerwatch, said: "It would be sensible for those in areas with a poor signal to limit their calls."

Mike Dolan, executive director of the Mobile Phone Operators Association, said: "All mobile handsets in the UK comply with international health and safety guidelines which apply whether the phones are used in rural or urban areas. Individual studies must be seen in the light of the total research effort into mobile phone safety."

Pregnant? Say Good-bye to
Morning Sickness With Ginger
From Reuters

As much as 80 percent of pregnant women suffer from morning sickness in their first trimester. However, expecting mothers need not fear, for research may have discovered a natural way to help ease these queasy, wrenching feelings: Ginger.

Ginger proved to be more effective in reducing nausea and vomiting in pregnant women than a placebo, and worked just as well as vitamin B6 (found to improve morning sickness symptoms in pregnant women), according to studies. None of the women who took ginger had experienced problems with their pregnancies.

Opting For Natural Alternatives to Cure Morning Sickness
These findings most likely come as a relief to expecting mothers. While there are numerous medications specifically designed to ease symptoms of morning sickness, many soon-to-be mothers withdraw from using drugs for fear of causing negative side effects in their unborn children. Instead, they turn to alternative treatments:

· Vitamins
· Acupuncture
· Herbal products
· Homeopathic remedies

Yet among natural options, ginger has long been used to treat nausea. In fact, ginger has become one of the top 20 best-selling herbal supplements in the United States. Additional natural products used to treat morning sickness include chamomile, peppermint and raspberry leaf.

PHILLIP DAY'S COMMENT: Another important point with morning sickness or period pains is hydration. Dr F Batmanghelidj, author of the bestselling, Water and Salt - Your Healers from Within, makes the point that there is no system or function in the body NOT pegged to the flow of water. Two litres/four pints a day of clean, filtered water for the average weight adult will ensure that menstruating or pregnant females are not in 'drought management', resulting in pain.

Hydration is also especially important for the following:

Esophageal Reflux
Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other bowel complaints
Lower back pain
Cancer
Heart disease and hypertension
Asthma
Arthritis
Osteoporosis

The Incredible Story of Essiac
by James Percival

Rene Caisse was a nurse in Canada. In 1923 she observed that one of her doctor's patients, a woman with terminal cancer, made a complete recovery. Enquiring into the matter, Rene found that the woman had cured herself with a herbal remedy which was given to her by an Ojibway Indian herbalist. Rene visited the medicine man, and he freely presented her with his tribe's formula. The formula consisted of four common herbs. They were blended and cooked in a fashion which caused the concoction apparently to have greater medicinal potency than any of the four herbs themselves. The four herbs were Sheep Sorrel, Burdock Root, Slippery Elm Bark, and Rhubarb Root.

With her doctor's permission, Rene began to administer the herbal remedy to other terminal cancer patients, who had been given up by the medical profession as incurable. Most recovered. Rene then began to collect the herbs herself, prepare the remedy in her own kitchen, and treat hundreds of cancer cases. She found that Essiac, as she named the herbal remedy (her own name backwards), could not undo the effects of severe damage to the life support organs. In such cases however, the pain of the illness was alleviated and the life of the patient often extended longer than predicted. In other cases, where the life support organs had not been severely damaged, cure was complete, and the patients sometimes lived another 35 or 40 years. Some are still alive today.

Rene selflessly dedicated herself to helping these patients. She continued to treat hundreds of patients from her home. She did not charge for her services. Donations were her only income. They barely kept her above the poverty line. Over the years, word of her work began to spread. The Canadian medical establishment did not take kindly to this nurse administering this remedy directly to anyone with cancer who requested her help. Thus began many years of harassment and persecution by the Canadian Ministry of Health and Welfare. Word of this struggle was carried throughout Canada by newspapers.

The newspaper coverage of Rene's work began to make her famous throughout Canada. Word was also spread by the families of those healed by Essiac. Eventually the Royal Cancer Commission became interested in her work. They undertook to study Essiac. In 1937 the Royal Cancer Commission conducted hearings on Essiac. Much testimony was furnished that Essiac was a cure for cancer.

Eventually the Canadian Parliament, prodded by newspaper coverage and the widespread support generated by Rene by former patients and grateful families, voted in 1938 on legislation to legalise the use of Essiac. Fifty-five thousand signatures were collected on a petition presented to the parliament. The vote was close, but Essiac failed by three votes to be approved as an officially sanctioned treatment for cancer.

The complete story of Rene Caisse's life and struggles is told in a book written by Dr. Gary L. Glum, entitled The Calling of an Angel. It tells of the documented recoveries of thousands of cancer patients who had been certified in writing by their doctors as incurable. Rene continued her work for 40 years until her death in 1978. Rene had entrusted her formula to several friends, one of whom passed the formula along to Dr. Glum.

Of interest is that, in the 1960's, Rene Caisse worked with the well-known Brusch Clinic in Massachusetts. Dr. Charles A. Brusch was the personal physician for President John F. Kennedy. After 10 years of research into Essiac, Dr Brusch made the following statement: "Essiac is a cure for cancer, period. All studies done at laboratories in the United States and Canada support this conclusion." A testimonial letter from Dr. Brusch is included in this handbook.

Further details are explained in Dr. Glum's book. Instructions on how to order a copy of the book are contained in this handbook. Dr. Glum also distributes, free of charge, the complete formula for Essiac along with instructions on how to brew it. This information is also contained in this handbook. We are indebted to Dr. Glum for his work. He has undergone significant sacrifice to get this information to us. Dr. Glum has also been harassed by his government for his efforts to inform us about Essiac. We trust he is somehow recompensed and rewarded for the losses he has incurred whilst working to spread the word of Rene Caisse's herbal formula.

WHAT IS ESSIAC?

The components of Rene's herbal drink interact to have an amazing effect upon the human body. The chemicals, minerals and vitamins appear to act synergistically to produce a variety of healing agents.

Sheep Sorrel:
Sorrel plants have been a folk remedy for cancer for centuries both in Europe and America. Sheep Sorrel has been observed by researchers to break down tumours and to alleviate some chronic conditions and degenerative diseases.
It contains high amounts of vitamins A and B complex, C,D,E,K,P, and vitamin U. It is also rich in minerals, including calcium, chlorine, iron, magnesium, silicon, sodium, sulphur and has trace amount of copper, iodine, manganese and zinc. The combination of these vitamins and minerals nourishes the glands of the body. Sheep Sorrel also contains carotenoids and chlorophyll, citric, malic, oxalic, tannic and tartaric acids.
The chlorophyll carries oxygen throughout the bloodstream. Cancer cells do not live in the presence of oxygen. Sheep Sorrel may also help to:
· reduce the damage of radiation burns
· increase resistance to x-rays
· improve the vascular system, heart function, intestines and lungs
· aid in the removal of foreign deposits from the walls of the blood vessels
· purify the liver and stimulate the growth of new tissue
· reduce inflammation of the pancreas and stimulate the growth of new tissue
· raise the oxygen level of tissue cells

Sheep Sorrel is viewed as the primary healing herb in Essiac.

Burdock Root:
For centuries Burdock has been used throughout the world to cure illness and disease. The root of the Burdock is regarded by many as a powerful blood purifier. It may help to clear congestion in respiratory, lymphatic, urinary and circulatory systems. It may also assist in promoting the flow of bile and eliminating excess fluid in the body. It may help to stimulate the elimination of toxic wastes and relieve liver malfunctions, and improve digestion. It may also play a part in assisting the removal of infection from the urinary tract, the liver, and the gall bladder. It may also assist in expelling toxins through the skin and urine. It has been regarded as beneficial against arthritis, rheumatism and sciatica.
Burdock Root contains vitamins A, B complex, C, E and P. It contains high amounts of chromium, cobalt, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, silicon and zinc and lesser amounts of calcium, copper, manganese and selenium. Much of the Burdock Root's curative power is attributed to its principal ingredient of Unulin, which may help to strengthen vital organs, especially the liver, pancreas and spleen.

Slippery Elm Inner Bark:
Slippery Elm Bark is widely known throughout the world as a herbal remedy. As a tonic, it is renowned for its ability to soothe and strengthen the organs, tissues, and mucous membranes, especially the lungs and stomach. It may help promote the fast healing of cuts, burns, ulcers and wounds. It mat also help revitalise the entire body.

It contains as its primary ingredient, a mucilage, as well as quantities of gallic acid, phenols, starches, sugars and vitamins A, B, complex, C, K, and P. It contains large amounts of calcium and selenium and trace amounts of iron, phosphorous, silicon and zinc. Slippery Elm Bark is known among herbalists for its ability to cleanse, heal and strengthen the body.

Rhubarb:
Rhubarb, also a well-known herb, has been used worldwide since 220BC as a medicine. The Rhubarb root is reported to exert a gentle laxative action by stimulating the secretion of bile into the intestines. It may also help stimulate the gall duct to expel toxic waste matter, thus purging the body of waste bile and food. As a result of this detoxifying action, the liver may be cleansed and chronic liver problems relieved.

Rhubarb root contains vitamin A and many of the B complex, C, and P. Its high mineral content includes calcium, chlorine, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, silicon, sodium, sulphur and zinc.

REPORTED BENEFITS OF ESSIAC
A number of well-researched and -referenced books have been written on the subject of Essiac (some listed in the back of this article). In the literature, the authors report the following therapeutic activity for this remedy:

1. Prevents the build up of fatty deposits in artery walls, heart, kidney and liver.
2. Regulates cholesterol levels by transforming sugar and fat into energy.
3. Destroys parasites in the digestive system and throughout the body.
4. Counteracts the effects of aluminium, lead and mercury poisoning.
5. Strengthens and tightens muscles, organs and tissues.
6. Makes bones, joints ligaments, lungs and membranes strong and flexible, less vulnerable to stress or stress injuries.
7. Nourishes and stimulates the brain and nervous system.
8. Promotes the absorption of fluids in the tissues.
9. Removes toxic accumulations in the fat, lymph, bone marrow, bladder, and alimentary canals.
10. Neutralises acids, absorbs toxins in the bowel and eliminates both.
11. Clears the respiratory channels by dissolving and expelling mucus.
12. Relieves the liver of its burden of detoxification by converting fatty toxins into water-soluble substances that can then be easily eliminated through the kidneys.
13. Assists the liver to produce lecithin, which forms part of the myelin sheath, a white, fatty material that encloses nerve fibres.
14. Reduces, perhaps eliminates, heavy metal deposits in tissues (especially those surrounding the joints) to reduce inflammation and stiffness.
15. Improves the function of the pancreas and spleen by increasing the effectiveness of insulin.
16. Purifies the blood.
17. Increases red cell production and keeps them from rupturing.
18. Increases the body's ability to utilise oxygen by raising oxygen level in the tissue cell.
19. Maintains the balance between potassium and sodium within the body so that the fluid inside and outside each cell is regulated: in this way cells are nourished with nutrients and are also cleansed.
20. Converts calcium and potassium oxalates into harmless forms by making them solvent in the urine. Regulates the amount of oxalic acid delivered to the kidneys, thus reducing the risk of stone formation in the gall bladder, kidneys or urinary tract.
21. Protects against toxins entering the brain.
22. Protects the body against radiation and x-rays.
23. Relieves pain, increases the appetite and provides more energy along with a sense of well-being.
24. Speeds up wound healing by regenerating the damaged area.
25. Increases the production of antibodies like lymphocytes and T-cells in the thymus gland, which is the defence of our immune system.
26. Inhibits and possibly destroys benign growths and tumours.

CHRONIC FATIGUE,
LUPUS, ALZHEIMERS, ETC.

We have found Essiac to be very helpful to many people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer's. We have also witnessed very rapid recoveries among chronic fatigue sufferers. Usually they report a dramatic increase in energy. Some Multiple Sclerosis sufferers had less dramatic but steady improvements in their conditions. One lady put her crutches away after taking Essiac for three months. Alzheimer's sufferers have reported improvements. Some with Arthritis have reported improvement, although apparently not all arthritic sufferers are helped by Essiac.

It appears that Essiac's actions to remove heavy metals, detoxify the body, restore energy levels and rebuild the immune system all act to restore the body to a level where it is better able to defeat the illness in question. In other words, Essiac seems to help in the rebuilding of the immune system and improves the illness defeating ability of the body so that it can then rid itself of the illness.

ESSIAC AND AIDS

In 1993, Dr. Gary Glum worked with an AIDS project in Los Angeles. The project had sent 179 AIDS patients home to die. They had pneumocystis carinii and histoplasmosis and were all underweight.

The project gave Dr. Glum five of these patients to work with. He took them off AZT and put them on a protocol, taking 2 ounces of Essiac three times a day. By February of 1994, all of the other patients had died. Dr. Glum's five patients were still alive. They were exercising, eating three meals a day, their weights were back to normal and they had no appearance of illness.

AN ENDORSEMENT BY DR. WHITAKER, M.D.

Dr. Julian Whitaker publishes a very informative and enlightening monthly newsletter named Health and Healing. It has 430,000 subscribers. In his November 1995 issue, he had an article entitled "What I Would Do If I Had Cancer". He states that if he had cancer he personally would follow a regime which included Essiac Tea.

Dr. Whitaker has over twenty years' experience. He has written five major health books: Reversing Heart Disease, Reversing Diabetes, Reversing Health Risks, A Guide to Natural Healing and Is Heart Surgery Necessary? Dr. Whitaker directs the Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach, California, which has treated thousands of patients.

RENE CAISSE:
"Though I worked each day from 9am to 9pm, my work was so absorbing there was no sense of fatigue. My waiting room was a place of happiness where people exchanged their experiences and shared their hope. After a few treatments, patients seemed to throw off their depression, fear and distress. Their outlook became optimistic and as their pain decreased, they became happy and talkative."

"I could see the changes in some of the patients. A number of them, presented to me by their doctors after everything known to medical science had been tried and failed, were literally carried into my clinic for their first treatment. To later see these same people walk in on their own, after only five or six treatments, more than repaid me for all my endeavours. I have helped thousands of such people. I offered the treatment at no charge."

"Most importantly, and this was verified in animal tests conducted at the Brusch Medical Centre and other laboratories, it was discovered that one of the most dramatic effects of taking this remedy was its affinity for drawing all of the cancer cells which had spread, back to the original site at which point the tumour would first harden, then later soften until it vanished altogether. In other cases, the tumour would decrease in size to where it could be surgically removed with minimal complications."

ESSIAC TESTIMONIALS

CHARLES A BRUSCH, M.D.

CAMBRIDGE, MA 02138

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Many years have gone by since I first experienced the use of ESSIAC with my patients who were suffering from many varied forms of cancer.

I personally monitored the use of this old therapy along with Rene Caisse R.N., whose many successes were widely reported. Rene worked with me at my medical clinic in Cambridge, Massachusetts where, under the supervision of 18 of my medical doctors on staff, she proceeded with a series of treatments on terminal cancer patients and laboratory mice.

Together we refined and perfected her formula.
On mice it has been shown to cause a decided recession of the mass and a definite change in cell formation. Clinically, on patients suffering from pathologically proven cancer, it reduces pain and causes a recession in growth. Patients gained weight and showed a great improvement in their general health. Their elimination improved considerably and their appetite became whetted.

Remarkably beneficial results were obtained even on those cases at the "end of the road", where it proved to prolong life and the "quality" of that life. In some cases, if the tumour didn't disappear, it could be surgically removed after ESSIAC with less risk of metastases resulting in new outbreaks.

Haemorrhage has been rapidly brought under control in many difficult cases, open lesions of lip and breast respond to treatment, and patients with cancer of the stomach have returned to normal activity among many other remembered cases. Also, intestinal burns from radiation were healed and damage replaced, and it was found to greatly improve whatever the condition.

All the patient cases were diagnosed by reputable physicians and surgeons. I do know that I have witnessed in my clinic, and know of many other cases, where ESSIAC was the therapy used - a treatment which brings about restoration through destroying the tumour tissue and improving the mental outlook which re-establishes physiological function.
I endorse this therapy even today for I have in fact cured my own cancer, the original site of which was the lower bowel, through ESSIAC alone. My last complete examination, when I was examined throughout the intestinal tract while hospitalized (August, 1989) for a hernia problem, revealed no sign of malignancy. Medical documents validate this. I have taken ESSIAC every day since my diagnosis (1984) and my recent examination has given me a clear bill of health.

I remained a partner with Rene Caisse until her death in 1978 and was the only person who had her complete trust and to whom she confided her knowledge and "know-how" of what she named "ESSIAC."

Others have imitated, but a minor success rate should never be accepted when the true therapy is available.

In the fall of 1992, my mother, who lives in Ohio, was told that her throat and lung cancer had reached the point that she only had ninety days left to live. My sister and I began to help her straighten out her affairs. I heard about Essiac. I sent her some. She drank it for two months. On December 22, she went back to visit the doctor. He thought that she was coming in to say goodbye. When he checked her she was in total remission. I am a nurse, and I have kept her x-rays as proof of her recovery.

My friend Joe Roberts was in a very bad way with Lupus. He could hardly move about. Some thought he was close to death. I gave him two bottles of herbal tea (Essiac). He improved, and started taking Essiac regularly. Within a month he looked like a new man, and appeared completely healed.

My husband has been through every treatment for his illness, and I am now trying Essiac tea. I thought I would try it first for my various aches and pains, stress, etc. I believe it has done wonders for me so I have started giving him the tea. It won't hurt and maybe his life will be better. A friend of mine has liver cancer and even though the oncologist gave him six months, he is now going on two years and says the only thing he takes is Essiac tea. Believe me, he is living proof of its success for him.

I met a friend at a seminar. He told me about Essiac. I had a cancerous condition in my female organs which was causing me a lot of pain. I took the Essiac, my pain went away, and I am now free of cancer. God bless you. My eyes are now opened up to the value of natural healing systems, and I spend a lot of time preaching this new religion to my friends.

I am 71 years old. I have had a very rare illness for twenty years. The medical people don't know what causes it, and they don't have a cure. It's called Cogan's Syndrome. It has destroyed my hearing in both ears, caused a lot of vertigo, a lot of aches and pains, and has damaged my heart. Most of my life I've had several colds every year and usually a case of flu. In January of 1996, the flu turned into pneumonia. That was when I decided to give your herbal Essiac Tea a try.

I am happy to tell you that since I began using your Essiac I have not had a cold or a sign of flu. I do believe that it has helped my recovery from pneumonia. I plan to continue its use. I drink 2 ounces about three times a week.

My brother-in-law gave me a bottle of Essiac herbal tea to try as a preventative measure. I enjoyed the taste. Soon realized a twenty-year stomach problem was gone, and it gives me an all-round better feeling. I am 60 years old and I work 7 days a week.

My nephew in Wisconsin learned he had cancer. He is unable to take chemo because of other health problems. He takes your tea faithfully. One year later all is in remission. Our family also uses organic sea salt. My wife used to have water retention. No longer has a problem there. We enjoy your products and keep up the good work!

I had prostate cancer. On August 10, 1994 I was given chemotherapy. I never told the doctor that I was taking Essiac and as a result the PSA rating went well below 0 (zero). I took the combination for 15 months and when it held below zero I quit the chemotherapy. Since then the PSA readings went like this:
October: 0.15
April: 0.37
October: 0.58
April: 0.73
I am continuing taking the Essiac.

I am in my fifties. It seems as if all my life I have had the flu at least once each year, and a bad cold for several times each year. It was like you could block out 1 to 2 months of each year when I would be laid up with the flu or a bad cold. I started taking Essiac five years ago. Since that time I have not had the flu, and only had a cold once (I think that the cold was part of a detoxification process). I am sure Essiac did this for me.

My brother was diagnosed one year ago with very, very severe leukemia. His doctors gave him chemotherapy for four weeks. The chemo made him look deathly ill. My sister and I were appalled. He looked like death itself. This large man who was over 6 feet tall, lay in his hospital bed in a fetal position, shaking from the chemotherapy.

The doctors told him that he would die in hospital if he stayed, or he could go home and die. My sister is a nurse, and she was determined to save my brother. She knew of the herbal remedy for cancer called Essiac. She asked the doctor to approve bringing Essiac into the hospital to give to our brother. The doctor felt that there was nothing else he could do, so he paved the way with the medical authorities.

My brother began taking Essiac and 10 drops of Pau D' Arco herbal formula each day, once in the morning and once in the evening. His blood count was at 4,800 (10,000 is normal). Within one week of the Essiac treatment he was not only alive, his blood count was at 10,800. In one more week his blood count was up to 14,000 - 4,000 higher than normal.

My brother began his Essiac treatments in August, 1992. He was so healthy by the next January that he and his wife went on a four-month cruise around the world. It is now August 1993, and he is very healthy, active and robust. I have to withhold my name because I do not want a lot of people calling me about his experience. I love my brother very much, we are very close, and I just thank God for simple things like Essiac, and the people all over who prayed for his recovery.

I have a friend from West Virginia who has had rheumatoid arthritis for over 9 years. In May I gave her some of my Essiac. She liked it and began taking it regularly. Within 2 weeks she felt great relief from her pain. Within 2 months she could raise her arms full length over her head, something she had not been able to do for 9 years. She just went to Ireland to visit her relatives, and she took some Essiac with her to give to them

Several years ago, I escorted my mother to the outpatient clinic of a local hospital to have a small lump removed from her parotid gland on the left side of her face. What a shock when the doctors found advanced lymphoma cancer throughout her body. I began researching volumes of books looking for some unknown answer. A program of nutritional supplementation and natural food diet was begun, in addition to chiropractic care, positive thought and humour therapy.

It was extremely tense as the doctors began chemotherapy. In fact mother was taken to the emergency room six times that first month. Being 80, it was probably her strong heart that kept her alive and with me to tell her story today. Dancing and teaching others to stay well through dance has kept her going strong all her life.

Letters with prayers for her improved health poured in and a friend sent an article about Essiac tea. Hopeful that this herbal formula could somehow help, I went searching for the ingredients, brewed the tea, and added it to her growing list of nutritional supplements.

On Christmas Eve, 1992, three months after my mother's diagnosis of lymphoma, the doctors pronounced that my mother was not just in remission but was cancer-free! While we will probably never know what cured her of this dreaded disease, we feel in our hearts that Essiac and nutrition played a major role.

Our family was devastated when my mother-in-law, Myrna, informed us that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In her case, it was ovarian cancer that had spread to the lymph glands and then to her lungs. It was diagnosed as inoperable and the doctors told her to get her affairs in order. After a hysterectomy, they told her that she would have about six months to live. The tumours in her lungs were too numerous to remove. My sister asked if there was some nutritional approach that might slow down the progress of the disease. The doctor assured her that there was none. By chance, my father heard a radio program where Essiac was explained.

The remedy was so simple and straightforward that I knew my mother-in-law could take it. She took a little each night. We held our breaths. The doctor and our nurse cousin told us not to get our hopes up. Yet the weekly x-rays began indicating something they did not expect. Little by little the tumours in her lungs stabilized… and they began to diminish. The nursing staff at the doctor's office reacted in awe as week after week the tumours began disappearing and her blood count return to normal.

A little more than a year after beginning Essiac, the doctor called to tell Myrna that she was an official miracle. Her charts showed no indication of cancer in any system. To date, five years later on, there has been no recurrence of cancer.

I began taking Essiac for severe arthritis and severe fatigue. The results are unbelievable! I am doing everyday normal things that I haven't been able to accomplish for ten years; ten years that have taken a great toll on my life. Since I have been taking Essiac, I have felt the years float away and I have regained the feeling of youth again. I am very happy with the results. My daughter, Donna Geary of Alta Loma, gave me my first bottle. The results are wonderful. The results were also immediate. Thank you for this wonderful drink.

My brother-in-law gave me a bottle of Essiac. I enjoyed the taste, and soon realised a 20-year-old stomach problem was gone. It gives me an all-round better feeling. I am 60 years old, and I work 7 days a week.

My nephew in Wisconsin learned that he had cancer. Sent him the book "Canada's Cancer Cure" about Essiac. He was unable to take chemo because of other health problems. He takes the tea faithfully, and one year later all is in remission.

My friend was diagnosed with lung cancer. I took it upon myself to give him a book on Essiac. He returned the next day to tell me he was interested, and I set him up with a supply. They had planned on chemotherapy but first wanted to monitor the growth rate, which consisted of periodic x-rays. The first sets of x-rays showed such slow (almost negligible) growth that they waited for the second set to confirm the situation. After the second set of x-rays, the doctor told Bob that if he had had such success with chemotherapy, he (the doctor) would have been pleased to take the credit for such improvement.

We are both grateful to the people who keep an open mind and heart to give cancer patients hope for cure. I deeply believe Essiac has helped cure Bob, and I'm much more comfortable using it than making no effort to stay healthy systemically. If you would like to share this letter with anyone, you have our blessing.

I had ovarian cancer, which was diagnosed as widespread. They removed my ovaries and six inches of colon. I was advised afterwards that they could not remove all of the cancer cells and they recommended chemotherapy. I refused because of heart problems (I had two heart surgeries the previous years). I had found an article about Essiac and told the doctors I was going to try it.

Well, the results have been remarkable. I had lost over sixty-two pounds and have now gained over sixteen back. Have been stronger and able to resume my work with ceramics. I do not believe that I would be alive now if it had not been for Essiac. I recommend it to everyone, and I am amazed at how cancer touches so many lives.

Ps: My last exam by the oncologist showed results, which were "perfect, perfect". I feel wonderful.

I had breast cancer. I started taking Essiac 3 weeks prior to my first chemotherapy session. Every side-effect that was predicted I would have were so-o-o diminished that I hardly noticed them. My blood work, both chemistry and hemo were, I was told, FANTASTIC for a chemotherapy patient. I play duplicate bridge with as many as 140 people attending a local game. Everyone commented on my appearance and energy level and were amazed. Some started taking Essiac for general health reasons. How do I know that it was Essiac? I went to California after my 5th chemo, and stayed for three weeks. Since we were moving from place to place, I did not take Essiac. Upon returning home I received my 6th and final treatment. I was so very sick: nausea, diarrhea, heartburn so bad that I couldn't sleep, and I was so very tired. I start radiation in a week, and you can bet that I will not be without my Essiac.

FROM PHILLIP DAY,
FOUNDER OF THE CAMPAIGN FOR TRUTH IN MEDICINE
My research company, Credence, has investigated cancer and the cancer industry for over 17 years. During this time, we have had the opportunity to examine many alternative treatments for cancer in great detail. I do not hesitate to recommend Essiac to the public as part of the metabolic therapy support program for the prevention of, and treatment for all types of cancer.

Our research has shown that cancer patients struggle with fungal and yeast infections fed by trapped blood sugars in ductal structures in the body. Over 96% of all cancers are located in these zones. Essiac can be used to great effect in killing fungi, yeasts, Candida albicans and other microbe infestations when used in conjunction with a raw, wholefood, organic diet. Essiac is covered in my best-selling book, Cancer: Why We're Still Dying to Know the Truth, available through Credence.
